I went to bed last night and read a book.
This doesn’t sound extraordinary does it but it’s been a very long time since I tucked into reading that wasn’t work related. When I rediscovered knitting, my reading time made way for feverishly working on my stitching, and bedtime stories were replaced with knitting manuals and pattern books in an attempt to soak up as much information as possible about my new craft. My work as a Tech Editor means I am reading for most of the day so it’s a good break for my eyes and brain to go to sleep listening to a podcast or radio drama and whilst I’ve read non-knitting related books on holiday, or occasionally picked up a ‘story’ book to browse over breakfast, I haven’t read a book at bedtime in years and truth be told, I really miss it. Reading has always been such a huge part of my life.
There is a small pile of new, uncracked spines sat on my bedside table and I’m going to work my way through them; new friends, new adventures, tales of woe and happiness, words, lots of words…I can’t wait!
I guess this is what counts as an accidental resolution, a bit like learning crochet was for me in 2013, being something I knew I wanted to do but never quite set my mind to and look where that’s ended up!
I’ve mentioned before that I’m really not one for getting over-excited at New Year, it’s a funny time of the year and I have learnt that it’s not good to dwell on the past but to learn from it and move forward, keep moving forward. January 1st is after all, just another day and plans for 2014 started months ago, in fact I cast off a project you will see sometime in Autumn just last night. I have conscientiously made one resolution though which I’ll share later in the week as I’m hoping a few of you will join me, it’s something a lot of tech editors, designers, knitters and crocheters are guilty of but could be so easily avoided…does that give you any clues?
Have you made any resolutions or set yourself an objective for 2014 either by accident or on purpose?
Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2014; prepare yourself for the bumps but just go with the ride.
