What on earth does the title of this blog post mean?
Well, if like me you’re feeling more than a little ‘politicked out’ and your reaction to the announcement of a UK snap General Election was a groan followed by a scream into the void as you realise there are weeks of political frenzy and barracking ahead of us, then join the General Election 2017 Make Along or #GE2017MAL as it has now been hashtagged!
What started as a tweet about hooking up a new crochet blanket and enabling CoopKnits at the same time:
Soon became a crochet blanket along:
Which soon gathered reactions from other crafters about potential ‘distraction’ (or otherwise) projects to work on over the coming weeks…
A fine sweater:
The Brexit embroiderer:
Or a bit of this and a bit of that:
Voting is of course hugely important, but the barrage of reporting and reaction across the media and social media can be overwhelming. So, while British politicians get their party-coloured knickers in a terrible twist and board their battle-busses to head out and meet ‘the people’, pick your preferred craft and choose a project to work on over the coming weeks that you can fully immerse yourself in, letting your mind wander to a calmer place while giving you something else to think and chat about. And if you’re not in the UK feel free to join in as well – there’s enough politics to go around!
It could be the perfect time to work on the stranded colourwork cardigan with steek that you’ve been eyeing up, or crocheting your own version of the fine filet curtains spotted in Corfu last summer (not me I swear), or maybe a hand stitched patchwork blanket? Or just look upon it as the perfect opportunity to learn a new technique or entirely different set of making skills? Bobbin lace, darning, weaving, spinning; the list is endless. For now I’ve made a start on the Honey Bee Blanket, but while I wait for a pattern update I’ll work on one of those other crochet blankets I might have laying around!
The Make Along will finish on the 9th June, the day after the election, but as there’s always going to be politics, there’s no pressure to finish anything by then. Please use the hashtag #GE2017MAL when posting on social media and feel free to leave link in the comments to any blog post you write about your chosen #GE2017MAL project, so other makers can easily find you and offer up oohs, aahhs, words of encouragement, advice and general chit chat away from the parliamentary goings on.
You can find me on Twitter and Instagram as knittingtastic or click each of those words and it will link you straight through to my profile page. Looking forward to seeing what you all decide to make!
A few general housekeeping notes:
I will not be engaging in political discussion, that’s not what the Make Along is about.
If you choose to do so then please be respectful of other peoples views. We are all different and all entitled to our own thoughts.
Remember that it is easy for words and tone to be easily misinterpreted on the internet.
Play nice and let’s all get something positive out of the next 7 weeks, whatever the outcome.
Oh, and please do go out and vote!
