It’s here and is more beautiful than I could have ever dreamed possible.
The overall colour is a complex dark pitch which becomes becomes silvery grey or tan brown in different lights. A soft and drapey handle becomes a fabric with bounce and structure once knitted. And it smells of the fields and the flock and new lambs in straw-filled barns and it is so exceptionally beautiful my heart sings whenever I pick it up.
Every step of my yarn journey has been exciting and nerve-wracking and very, very emotional. I can’t believe it had actually happened. We made it happen, and what I thought would be the end of this adventure is really just the beginning.
Daughter of a Shepherd would not have been possible without the following people:
Dad and his partner Julia who not only look after this flock but have helped pack fleeces and encouraged me along the way.
Mum and Grandma for teaching me how to knit and crochet.
Charlie Forbes-Adam of Escrick Park Estate where the Hebridean flock graze as part of an amazing conservation project.
John, Juliet and all at the mill for taking on this project and doing such an incredible job spinning the yarn.
My dear friend Susan Cropper – I doubt I would be so involved in the fibre community without her.
Graphic designer, Anthony Duncan-Smith who has made Daughter of a Shepherd come alive.
Probably Jane Lithgow, Jeni from Fyberspates, Andy from Chester Wool Company, Joy of The Knitting Goddess and Rachel ‘CoopKnits’ Coopey for all their advice and support along the way.
Each and every one of you who have followed this journey and supported me at every step – I could not, and would not, have done this without you and wish I could list you all individually.
And my dear Mr K who didn’t even flinch when I told him I was going to spend the money I saved for our mortgage deposit on spinning some wool, in fact he helped deliver it to the scourers!
Daughter of a Shepherd yarn will launch at Edinburgh Yarn Festival on Friday 18th March 2016. There will be a final news update next week with all you need to know about buying it there, plus another announcement about the next stage in this journey.
Thank you one and all – you are all amazing.
