I recently finished a pair of Hebe socks from A Knitted Sock Society by Rachel Coopey, published a few months ago by Quail. This beautiful collection of patterns uses Rowan Fine Art in Rachel’s trademark clever and unpredictable ways to produce an amazing armful of handknit socks.

A Knitted Sock Society

Rachel kindly took time out of her crazy schedule for a catch-up and to tell me more about the book and her designs:

RA. Hi Rachel, how’s things? No doubt you are as busy as ever?
RC. Good! Busy! This year has been a whirlwind of books, shows and knitters.

RA. So, tell us how A Knitted Sock Society came about…
RC. Rowan wanted a collection of socks for their new sock yarn and I loved the Fine Art yarn!

Hebe socks

RA. The Rowan Fine Art yarn is an absolute joy to work with and handle, how did it inspire the patterns?
RC. It really did; the colours are beautiful but more variegated than I would normally design with, so I used each shade as the starting point which is a bit different to how I usually work but I enjoyed it.

RA. Do you dream of socks and what would be your dream sock, or indeed who would you love to design and knit a pair of socks for?
RC. I do dream of socks! I have a notebook by the bed for scribbling down ideas that come to me in a dream or more often just when I’m dozing off! I’d love to knit a pair of socks for Jon Snow (the newsreader not Game of Thrones), he wears really bright socks on the news – I’ve asked him his shoe size a couple of times on twitter but no response yet, I’ll keep trying!

Enid socks

RA. I know you are usually working months in advance so what plans do you have up your sleeve for 2014…any chance of a scoop or is it all strictly hush hush?
RC. I’m working on a project with Baa Ram Ewe and their lovely Titus yarn and I’ll be doing the 4th year of my sock club with The Knitting Goddess, apart from that it’s top secret!

RA. And finally, what are you hoping Santa will pop in your knitted stocking?
RC. A large quality of Rowan Big Wool for a humongous cabled jumper – if we are going to have the bad winter everyone says we are I’m going to be ready for it!

All the socks!
